Gwangju Uprising (1980)
In May 1980, the citizens of Gwangju, South Korea, rose up against a military dictatorship that had seized power after decades of authoritarian rule. Students and workers filled the streets, demanding democracy. The army responded with brutal force. Hundreds were killed. Thousands were beaten, imprisoned, silenced.
Yet Gwangju could not be erased. The courage of those who fought and fell became the spark that ignited South Korea’s democracy movement.
This design honors that uprising: bodies in motion, a nation’s flag behind them, voices refusing to be crushed.
It is a tribute to the truth Gwangju left behind — that even when power fires on its people, the cry for freedom cannot be buried.
