Born enslaved, Frederick Douglass (1818–1895) escaped and became one of the most powerful voices of the 19th century. Through speeches, writings, and his autobiography, he exposed the brutality of slavery and demanded justice in a nation built on contradiction.
Douglass believed that knowledge itself was a form of rebellion. To learn to read was to claim freedom. To speak truth was to resist silence.
This design by Alexander Hayes strips away his face but not his presence. Because Douglass was never only one man. He was a movement.
