This design by Alexander Hayes is a tribute to Malcolm X, captured in one of the most iconic and misunderstood photos of the civil rights movement: standing by a window, rifle in hand, watching over his family.
In 1964, Malcolm declared:
“We declare our right on this earth...to be a human being, to be respected as a human being...by any means necessary.”
Often reduced to a slogan, this was a call for self-defense, dignity, and agency in the face of systemic violence. Malcolm X wasn't promoting violence: he was rejecting silence. He stood not just against racism, but against the demand that Black resistance remain polite and passive.
This shirt reclaims that moment, not as a provocation, but as a mirror.
A reminder that liberation doesn’t always come peacefully. And that protecting your people can itself be an act of rebellion.
