Angela Davis (born 1944) stood trial in 1970, accused of crimes she did not commit, facing the death penalty. She spent sixteen months in jail before being acquitted.

But Davis was never just a prisoner. She was a philosopher, a revolutionary, a voice for Black liberation, feminism, and abolition. The image of her defiant, unbowed, framed by handcuffs and courtrooms, became a global symbol of resistance.
